Surround yourself with people you can trust to buy with clarity and confidence

The process of buying a home can be a little daunting to many, especially when you feel alone in the process. I am here to tell you that you are not alone and I believe in having a home buying team where you surround yourself with trusted advisors who will be honest and place your interests above all else.

While you will need a real estate agent to navigate the process and a lender to provide financing, there are a few more worth considering, including a home insurance agent, a financial advisor, and an attorney.

Here is a look at the different members to consider for your team. Download the Home Buying Team guide to start building your team.

buyer(s)

The process starts with you and you may be buying solo, as a couple, or with a close friend or business partner.  You are the decision makers.

real estate agent

Your real estate agent works on your behalf to promote your interests with the utmost good faith, loyalty, and fidelity. Your agent negotiates on your behalf and is your advocate. They have a fiduciary responsibilty to you once agency is established through a buyer agreement.

lender

Your lender is the financial institution that lends money directly to you. Plan to interview at least 3 lenders to make sure you are getting the best loan and rate for you. You can also work with a lending broker, who helps to find you a lender.

home insurance agent

An insurance agent will help you find the best coverage and price for your homeowners insurance. Unless you already have a relationship in place, I recommend shopping around.

financial advisor

Buying a home is the single biggest purchase you will make. Working with a great financial advisor will help to weigh this purchase with your savings and/or other investments as well as help to explain tax implications. In other words, they ensure you are maximing your investments in the home and elsewhere.

attorney

There are a lot of forms & contracts associated with purchasing real estate, most of which have been provided by the Colorado Real Estate Commission. As your real estate agent, I cannot advise on legal matters and will not try. Thus, it may be helpful to you if you have an attorney review any document you sign your name to.

other family members or close friends

I encourage you to include the family members or close friends whom you rely on for big decisions. They know you best, make for a good sounding board, and are a welcome addition to the home buying team.

Buying a home is going to be the biggest purchase you make, and that doesn’t mean it has to be the scariest. By surrounding yourself with the right people, people you can trust, you will be in a position to buy with clarity and confidence.
